This class is a blended learning class combining two face-to-face sessions (first and last sessions) at SMCC with online learning assignments and interaction. Focus will be on the essential skills of a successful college student, including study skills, time management, decision-making strategies, financial literacy, career pathways exploration and academic readiness. Required: CASAS Reading 241 or Accuplacer Reading/Writing 236. Fulfills required FIG graduation credit at both CMCC & SMCC

This course will focus on getting each student’s reading and writing abilities to the collegiate level as measured by the Accuplacer post-secondary placement exam. Students will read and analyze texts and produce their own writings in various rhetorical models.

Would you like to improve your reading and writing skills to be college ready? Let’s focus on preparing for reading and writing at the college level. Written work and readings will be analyzed and assessed in one-on-one sessions with the instructor. We will practice comprehension skills and reading strategies to understand college texts. In addition, we will write short essays from various rhetorical modes and learn how to edit our writing by applying the conventions of grammar and mechanics.
